Heat Pump Technology

What’s Heat pump system?

Basically, a heat pump includes a compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator. It uses minimal electricity to drive the compress, nevertheless, in order to achieve energy-saving purpose, it draws many times of heat from the environment and uses total energy to heat or cool a house.

Types of Heat Pump System

According to the source where a heat pump unit extract heat from, heat pump system can be classified to air-source heat pump and water-source heat pump(ground-source or geothermal heat pump, whatever it’s called).  Both heat pump system abstract heat from the environment.

Air-source heat pumps(ASHPs)

Obviously, an air source heat pumps (ASHPs) absorb heat from the outside air to heat your home and hot water. There are two types of air source heat pump, air-to-air and air-to-water.

Air-to-air heat pumps, commonly known as air conditioning, provide space heating by blowing warm air into your home.

Air-to-water heat pumps are multi functional system, they can heat radiators, underfloor heating and hot water. They offer a popular alternative to gas or electric heating systems by eliminating the use of fossil fuels in the home.

Though air source heat pumps have much advantages in easy installation, less investment, easy maintenance.  However, the disadvantage is also obvious.  Since air source heat pump uses free energy from ambient air, however, its efficiency is strongly connected to the conditions of ambient air.  It does less matter when cooling in summer, and heating in winter with lowest temperature above zero.  However, when the temperature goes down below zero in winter, the system actives defrosting frequently, and the efficiency goes down consequently. Because of this, conventional model operating minimal ambient temperature is -10℃.  To solve this problem, Inverter technology and EVI technology are newly introduced. By using inverter and EVI technology, air source heat pump can operate under -25℃, covering most areas in the planet.

Water source heat pump(WSHPs):

Water source heat pumps are also called Geothermal heat pump. Differ from air source heat pumps, water source heat pumps draw energy from water or earth, where the year-round temperature maintains at constant 10~16℃. Exact temperature depends on location and the depth of the system’s piping. Compared to air source heat pump, it is easier to collect heat at those temperatures and is less impacted by the environment changes.

Water to air heat pumps, on the other hand, work on basically the same principle as air source heat pumps, but they extract heat from a body of water rather than the air. They do this by cycling water through a system of pipes that is laid out at the bottom of a body of water. As the water cycles through, it gathers heat from the lake or reservoir and then carries it back to your house. In the summer, the process is reversed and heat is carried out of your house and expelled in the cooler water outside.

Water to Water heat pumps, like water to air heat pump, the water to water heat pump draws energy from water or earth. However, water to water heat pump exchange heat to water and produces hot water by using refrigerant-water heat exchanger.  Then the hot water is transferred to different indoor terminals.  The hot water connect to radiator for space heating, to domestic water tanks for shower and daily use, to floor heating coil for floor heating, to swimming pool for swimming pool heating.
